The municipal cemetery of Son Sang is one of the most interesting funerary art ensembles in Mallorca. The cemetery is structured across multiple levels, corresponding to different construction phases, accessed from Camí de sa Coma through three beautiful entrance gates. However, the cemetery of Sóller stands out above all for containing one of the most significant collections of funerary art in Mallorca, offering a wide symbolic repertoire developed in tombs, funerary monuments, and pantheons that follow the principles of early 20th-century Modernist art.
Sculptors such as the Catalan Josep Llimona contributed to the cemetery. Llimona created the funerary monument for the Morell family, depicting the Virgin Mary, Saint John, and Saint Mary Magdalene mourning the body of Christ. Also notable for its beauty is the sculptural group of the Darder Ferrer family pantheon. Of unknown authorship, it represents a figure typical of funerary sculpture of the period: the mourning women. It is a female figure kneeling on a large monolith decorated with floral reliefs. Crowning the monolith is a majestic seated angel.
Other sculptures in the cemetery were made by Mallorcan sculptors such as Tomàs Vila, Miquel Arcas, and the Sóller-born Cristòfol Quintana. In many of the hypogea, there is a recurring motif of a female angel holding a medallion with floral decoration. The symbolic repertoire of Modernism made extensive use of floral elements. In funerary art, roses are predominant, which, due to their circular shape, symbolise the stages of the life cycle: from the beauty of youth to the decay of death.
